Willard PTA
Meeting Highlights November 8, 2006 Next Meeting Date: December 7 at 6:30 p.m. Important dates coming up:
Co-Presidents Angelic Ervin and Margit Birge welcomed us. A mix of parents from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades and staff, were present. Dinner was prepared and served by Matt and Sarah - thank you! Minutes from the previous PTA budget meeting were approved. Minutes from the September 18, 2006 meeting were approved. It was decided there was a need for further discussion about how best to disseminate minutes to members. Principal's Report
Fund Raising Plans (Hilary Kitka): The fundraising committee presented ideas for possible events: Spring Fling, a community-building activity in March or April, auction, raffle, carnival, barbque. Discussion about the raffle included concerns about middle school students selling tickets and collecting money; most were in favor of doing a raffle and the committee will continue the discussion. It was pointed out that it can be hard to combine community-building events with fundraising, and some thought that fundraising is more successful when it's adults only and alcohol is served. The committee will continue discussing options and return with proposals at a future meeting. Calendar of Family/Parent Events and Brief Updates: The survey of parents conducted at registration indicated that parents are interested in a variety of topics. Margit is looking for point people to line up presenters; she is working on an evening for parents about drug and alcohol prevention. Thania offered to provide translation for Spanish-speaking families. AM Coffee Chats are forming with Margit hosting the 8th grade parents, David for the 7th grade parents, Peg for the 6th grade parents, and Thania for the Latino parents. All parents will be welcome at any of the Coffee Chats. Robert mentioned that the school population is made of the following groups (in this order by size of group): African American, Caucasian, 999 (multi race), Hispanic, Pacific Islander, Asian, and Native American. Margit will be working out the details of the Chats. The Willard Pool is threatening to close down. We are in need of a parent or neighbor who uses the pool, to represent Willard. The next meeting is tomorrow, 11/9/06 from noon - 1:30 pm... George Rose discussed the Drama program. The YMTC will not be happening at Willard due to lack of funds. However they will be presenting a workshop to those interested in musical theatre. "The Tempest" will be presented by a group of teachers, date to be announced. The Willard Drama Club which meets Mondays at 3-4pm will be auditioning students this coming Monday, for a play written by students entitled, 'The Course of True Love Will Never Run Smooth', to be presented in the spring in the Metal Shop. A Turf grant of $2500.00 will be written on the subject of interest for kids in middle school. PTA Council (citywide) meets once per month. Next meeting is Monday, November 13 at 6 or 6:30. Thania volunteered to attend. It was suggested that the PTA members take turns rotating this important responsibility. Fred Huxley announced that the directory will be published early December, 2006. The 7th and 8th grade database is complete, with the 6th grade soon to be so. The group discussed the format of PTA meetings and the possibility of having short meetings before large events. One option would be to prepare power point presentations to use at large meetings; Kelly offered to help with those. George Rose shared with the group his goal of bringing Junior College representatives to discuss preparation for high school and college. Thirty percent of students attending college began in a junior college. Again, Thania volunteered to help translation efforts. This will begin in Jan. and peak in March when Berkeley High counselors come to the school. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM |
