Willard PTA
Meeting Highlights December 7, 2006 Co-Presidents Angelic Ervin and Margit Birge welcomed us. Nine parents in addition to the board members were present. Outreach for Willard plans were discussed and sign up sheets were passed around for the various elementary schools that feed into Willard. Locke Yaeger volunteered to coordinate outreach to elementary schools (653-6761). Minutes from the previous meeting were approved. Principal's Report:
Mark Shaw presented the revised budget. Mark, Susanna, Fred, and Marjorie announced that the student directory is to be sent out soon. Margit discussed the proposed $600 stipend for four student level advisors. Other issues included there is a need for a lifeguard for spring semester but there is currently no budget for the position. The district had payed for the fall but not the spring semester. The PTA could fund this, as there is a surplus. Mark mentioned that usually not all mini-grants are completed or finished, so our budget of $6K is ample. We will need a new treasurer beginning with the New Year; any recommendations please give to Angelic or Margit. Diane and Tish discussed the mini grants and how they are chosen based on what enhances kid's education. Ms. Higgins' fund (covers student personal hygiene needs, emergency lunches, etc.) will be added into the PTA budget for $300 per year. The governor promised additional funding for P.E., so these will be used to cover the P.E. dept requests for golf equipment if possible. The proposed budget was approved by the group, with revisions. New or revised items in the final budget include funds for spring lifeguard, stipends for grade level advisors, Ms. Higgins' fund, and one round of teacher stipends of $100 for all credentialed teachers, for a total of $24,400 in expenses. Total fundraising is projected to bring in approximately $17,600, and reserves will be used to cover the difference. The group agreed with the treasurer's recommendation to reduce reserves in this way, which still leaves a projected reserve of $8,400 for next year. The proposal from the mini-grant committee was also approved for a total of $5,720 in grants for 13 different activities. PTA will recommend that SSC fund an additional $4,000 of activities that are included in the Site Plan. Proposals not funded included requests for past activities, staff appreciation, and payment for lost items confiscated from students, as these did not meet the criteria of enhancing students' education for this year. The garden survey (developed by the 7th grade class) was distributed along with a letter of explanation. Future PTA meetings will be announced after reviewing the calendar in order to coordinate with dates of other meetings at the school. Marjorie will post the next newsletter on January 8, 2006. Spring Day will be coordinated by George Rose, following state testing in May. No classes will be held and he is looking for point persons to be on the coordinating committee. Winter concert on December 13, and the cooking class will be preparing a dessert. Tours of Willard for incoming students will be on Tuesday mornings for parents and teachers. Call the office for more information. Meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m. |
