Willard PTA
Highlights of May 15, 2007 PTA Meeting
Minutes from last PTA meeting approved
Auction/Raffle: Reviewed Auction and Raffle proceeds - made between $3,000 - 4,000 Approximately 1,400 tickets were sold ($2,300) Overall went smoothly and strengthened connection to the school by having it on site. Suggestions for next year: Need more people for set-up, maybe add a live auction component or add other activities to keep people there, e.g. card tournament, entertainment, raffle items throughout the evening, set up tables in the back to eat and socialize, solicit more items from teachers. Twice as many people came as last year (estimated 75-100 this year), bringing extended family, and three times as many staff people attended as have come previously. Movie night was successful, however only 25 kids showed up. Suggestions were to add more physical activity, more games (120-140 kids were at the dance ) Discussion about moving the auction/raffle to winter; no decision made. Teacher's Luncheon: Julie Gordon said it was a big success: We spent less money and it was more personalized. Lisa Sibony coordinated salads and desserts through the e-tree. Recommendation that ALL staff be invited as opposed to just teachers; agreement to do this next year. Locke Jaeger suggested an all-staff breakfast in the Teacher's Lounge. Julie and Locke will coordinate for June 11th Spring Day Big success. Kids said it was the best ever More volunteers were needed Need to figure out which areas need volunteers and what the shifts would be Kids were better behaved this year at the Talent Show Approximately 400 kids came to watch There were concerns from adult observers about the "dancing" - overtly sexual, etc. Fred Huxley commented about the success of how the perimeter of the school was patrolled. 6th grade camping trips Ms. Pritchett and Mr. Chinn took their class camping last week Mr. Rose takes his classes this week (May 23/24) Mr. Evans and Mr. Andrade take their classes next week (May 30/31) 8th graders went to Angel Island on May 17th PASS (Parents for Academically Successful Students - an initiative started by the District) Will Walker led a workshop talking about attitudes toward race Questionnaires were filled out and exercises were done relating to how people perceived themselves and how they felt they were perceived by others. Goal is to close the achievement gap. Latinos and African-Americans need to feel included. Schools are unwelcoming and this needs to change. Hoping to have people become more active in governance, PTA, etc. Need to have more cultural awareness, start dialogs, etc. Testing Writing results back Teachers pleased with results. Comparable with other middle schools. Math score results in but not broken down yet by school. Staff Changes Mr. Ithurburn reviewed some staff changes for next year: Ms. Cole, science, Ms. Pritchett, History/English, and Mr. Stefl, Art, will be leaving, as will our counselor Ms. Luporini. Mr. Chinn will be working part-time, so a new 6th grade math teacher will be needed. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. |
